At January 7 Smackdown he lost Intercontinental title twice to Kofi Kingston, blamed by his girl friend Vickie Guerrero, requested her to choose a perfect man but got a chance to participate in #1 contender’s match due to his girl friend’s involvement and successfully defeated three superstars to became new #1 contender and celebrated his memorable victory with Vickie Guerrero.
#1 contender attended to Edge’s Cutting Edge show along with his girl friend Vickie Guerrero in January 14 Smackdown event, decided to take her girl friend to backstage when Edge insults his girl friend and shocked when Edge shows his kissing scene with her girl friend NXT rookie diva Kaitlyn but later attacked him but received a boot shot and later saved Vickie from Edge by injuring him with steel steps and after that kissed Vickie Guerrero to express his inner heart feelings.

In August 7 Friday night Smackdown, he become new #1 contender of Intercontinental title by defeating Finlay, Mike Knox and R Truth but escaped intelligently from Rey Mysterio and defeated Finlay in another match after Mike Knox injures Finlay in August 14 Smackdown event.
On September 10, 2009 in Superstars edition, #1 contender of WWE Intercontinental Championship Dolph Ziggler faced Slam Master J in one on one wrestling match. Dolph Ziggler well analyzed Slam Master J and defeated him.
